Why W3C and Validation?

Who are the W3C?

W3CThe Worldwide Web Consortium is an international organisation, set up to develop and regulate web standards. Nowadays, there are many different operating systems, web browsers and devices available to view web pages and the number is constantly growing. Websites developed using W3C guidelines and passing their validation tests are much more likely to be read by all of these various web browsing methods.

By far the most popular tool to perform this validation is the infamous W3C’s Web Standards – HTML and CSS validation.

Most Web documents are written using mark-up languages, such as HTML or XHTML. These languages are defined by technical specifications.

The act of checking a document against these constraints is called validation, and this is what the Mark-up Validator does. Validation is a process of checking your documents against a formal Standard, such as those published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) . It serves a similar purpose to spell checking and proofreading for grammar and syntax, but is much more precise and reliable than any of those processes because it is dealing with precisely-specified machine languages, not with human natural language

People are usually put off by validation purely due to the enormity of the task, however usually at their cost, as it is considered a very important factor, as some search engine crawlers may reject or even stop crawling a page when encountered with too many validation errors, this can prevent indexing of links to new pages.

No matter how competent you are at coding, it is human nature to make mistakes and this is often the reason why random code errors creep into your code, although it is sometimes impossible to remove all validation errors, the trick here is to get the number of validation errors down to or as close to zero as physically possible.

Conforming to W3C code validation not only shows that your SEO company is competent and doing their job effectively, but more importantly your website is more likely to be compatible on numerous browsers to maximise your website’s exposure.

At Website North Devon, we ensure that we conform to W3C Validation.
