We have recently had concern from a few of our clients who have reported being contacted by telephone and being offered similar domain names to ones they already own.

You receive a telephone call from a sales person and the usual script is either ‘a competitor is trying to buy a domain name which is like yours’ or ‘an ex employee is trying to register a similar domain name to yours’

The sales person will often try and offer you several domain names and the prices will be a lot higher than normal domain name costs. For example, .co.uk domains are being offered for between £100 and £150 each.

You will be pressured by the sales person to order the domain names by credit card and they will give you a deadline to order before the imaginary interested party buys the names.

The truth is there is nobody trying to register your domain name. If anyone else wanted to register a domain name similar to yours, they would simply be able to register them, as domains are sold on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
